LOOSE CURLS

HAIR TUTORIAL: LOOSE CURLS

The first hair tutorial is finally up! Thank you so much for being patient with me! I have enjoyed receiving all your emails and comments asking for hair tips, products I use, and that messy bun. Let me first begin with saying I’m probably the least equip person to take on hair tutorials. Typically my hair is thrown back in a far from impressive knot needing to be washed, moisturized, oiled, or whatever else I should be doing. Occasionally, I will recklessly wrap my hair in a bun and attempt styling it in a way to achieve that effortless, messy bun. I can honestly say there are no steps or secret concoction that I follow. It’s basically luck of the draw on most days. Hoooowwever, with that said, I will attempt to share with you any style or products that works for me the best I can!

I’m so excited for you to meet a dear friend of mine, Kelsey. It’s really only appropriate for Kelsey to be doing the loose curl tutorial since she actually taught me how to master this curl. I have a feeling you will be seeing her fairly often… given she really is “that girl” with unbelievable hair and can do anything with it. I hope you enjoy this tutorial! If you have any questions just shoot me and email. I look forward to sharing about my Great Lengths hair extensions and that messy bun soon!  Thanks for reading guys! Have a great day!

French fishtail braid chignon

Hairstyle tutorial – French fishtail braid chignon

A new hairstyle tutorial for you, with an interesting twist on the fishtail braid. Sometimes referred to as a seashell braid, this curving fishtail does have a shell-like quality and it’s a beautiful upstyle for day or night.

You can learn the basic fishtail braid technique here and see below for the step-by-step tutorial for this braided upstyle.

How to get the look

Step 1 - Brush your hair back to remove any knots.

Step 2 - Make a short part on the right side and take a section of hair to begin your braid.

Step 3 - Make a French fishtail braid from the top right to the bottom left of your hair. French fishtail braids use the same technique as a regular fishtail but you add in extra hair from each side as you braid. Pick up a small section of hair from the left and cross it into your right hand. Pick up a small section of hair on your right side and cross it over into your left hand. Repeat this as your braid diagonally down your head.

Tip: For fishtail braids, I find it helpful to think of them as two ponytails. Hold one ponytail in each hand and then you cross little pieces over from one side to the other, always keeping one ponytail in the palm of your hand.

Step 4 - When your braid reached behind your left ear, start to curve it around and braid along your lower hairline. Continue into a regular side fishtail braid until all your hair is braided. Secure the end with an elastic.

Tip: Use a small clear elastic as it won’t show when you create the chignon.

Step 5 - Twist the braid up and around into a spiral bun. Pin in place with bobby pins.

Soft Waves

Soft, loose curls: 4 simple steps to making wavy hair that’s perfect for summer

Structured curls—the kind that have been so popular with the Hollywood set on award show red carpets—will always be a go-to style, but soft, wavy hair is definitely the look to try this summer. From Veronica Lake to Lana Del Rey, soft waves have both retro appeal and a modern, cool girl aesthetic. It’s a trend that fits in with the move to make everything as minimal as possible, like the dropped out curls Tanya Taylor did for Fall 2013. But knowing how to make hair wavy can be a bit of a trick to master. Irons are designed with perfectly round corkscrew curls in mind and the longer your hair, the harder it becomes to get a curl to hold.

So how do you make hair wavy? We asked Toronto-based hair stylist Margot Keith to show us in this step-by-step tutorial. While everyone has a different technique for curling hair, there are two main tricks to note when creating loose waves. First, you want to make sure every curl is done in the same direction. So if you hold the curling iron in front of the section of hair you’re about to curl and then wrap the hair around in a forward motion, you’ll want to make sure you repeat this with every curl. (It’s especially important to make a note of your curling motion when you switch sides—because you also switch hands, it’s where most people mix up their curling technique.) Second, you make hair wavy by brushing out the curls as soon as they’re set. This loosens them up (the whole point of soft waves!) and combines individual curls together. If your hair is particularly good at holding style, you can even tug on each curl after it’s released from the curling iron to further loosen it up. Ready to make waves? Read on for our complete step-by-step tutorial.

How to make hair wavy:
1. Part your hair at its natural part and section off your hair. By spending an extra five minutes before you start curling it will make the whole process much easier and ensure that your curls are clean. For added protection and hold, spray some heat protectant into your hair—Redken Spray Starch 15 is a favourite for its ability to help curls keep their hold without feeling too “crunchy” or over-processed. (An essential for soft, wavy hair!)

2. With a 1.5” curling iron, wrap a small section of hair around the barrel and hold it to set for 15-20 seconds. When you release the iron, keep the curl coiled up in your hand and let it cool slightly before dropping. Continue this process, making sure that all curls are wrapped around the iron in the same direction as you go.

3. Spray a medium hold hairspray all over your hair and then brush the curls out with a natural bristled brush. The brushing is key: it’s what makes tight curls turn into loose waves and helps combine individual curls into one cohesive wave of hair. Very Veronica Lake!

4. Add another shot of hairspray if you like—and then spend the rest of the day (or week, if you don’t wash your hair!) enjoying your loose, wavy hair.

Bouffant

Bouffant hair tutorial: How to add some Lana Del Rey-approved volume to your look

Alright kids, this hair tutorial is a fun one. Considering that she’s the cover of our Summer issue, it only made sense to take inspiration from Lana Del Rey for a hair tutorial. While she’s often spotted styling her hair in loose waves or a deep side part (both of which we just happen to have tutorials for as well: waves here, side-part here) Lana Del Rey’s fondness for the ’50s and ’60s mean she’s sported a bouffant more than once. The video for “National Anthem” is all about the Lana Del Rey bouffant and she wore her hair up for much of her summer festival tour in 2012.

While the thought of attempting to add a few inches of volume to your hair may seem overwhelming, the bouffant is easier to master than you may think. If you can tease your hair, you can do a bouffant. This bouffant hair tutorial was created in conjunction with Toronto-based hairstylist Margot Keith, who knows a thing or two about adding impressive amounts of volume to even the sleekest heads of hair. She’s also made learning how to do a bouffant totally foolproof. Read on for our complete step-by-step hair tutorial.

How to do a bouffant:

1. Because the bouffant is all about volume, give your hair some help by setting it with hot rollers. (Bonus: It helps put you in the ’50s mood!) If you don’t have hot rollers, curling your hair with a large barrel iron also works—just make sure to use a curling iron that’s 1.5” or larger.

2. Section off all the hair that sits at the crown of your head and begin to tease with a natural bristle teasing brush. It may seem overwhelming at first, but if you work through the section piece by piece, a very mailable “pile” of hair will start to form. Once you have enough volume, pull this section back and secure it loosely with an elastic ponytail holder. This hair is the “stuffing” for your bouffant.

3. Now take the hair that frames your face and brush it back, overtop the pouf of teased hair. Use the teasing brush to smooth this hair as you go—the idea is that the un-teased hair should cover over the “stuffing” and hide any bumps or tangles. Secure this hair to the first ponytail you created, using another elastic.

4. Balance out your bouffant by lightly teasing any hair around the pouf. Once it looks like everything is in the right place, spray on a healthy amount of your favourite hairspray—and you’re ready to go!

hair tuorial 1960s style

Hairstyle how to: Create a 1960s style ponytail

1960s hairstyles are a huge trend. From loose Bardot bouffants, to the perfectly crafted Mad Men hairstyles, take a look back at
the 1960s fashions for your next hairstyle.

This easy ponytail hairstyle is influenced by the loose hairstyles Brigitte Bardot wore. The 1960s shape is created by teasing at the crown and keeping the ponytail low and a little messy.
What you need:

Depending on your hair type. you will need some product to help keep this volume in your hair. I usually recommend a volumiser or mousse in towel dried hair and blow dry your hair with a round brush to create volume, with a little curl at the ends of your hair.

How to create a 1960s style ponytail
 Step by step
It’s important to start with a good base. Freshly washed hair that has been blowdried for volume as described above. If your hair is wavy or curly, second day hair will also hold this style well.

1-2 - Tease at the crown. Create that volume and shape by teasing your hair at the crown of your head. Add a little hairspray if you need extra hold.

3 - Make a low ponytail. Gather all your hair into a low ponytail, but don’t pull the hair tightly at the top so you keep as much volume and shape in the crown area.

4 - Loosen the top section for more volume. Gently pull at the top of your ponytail to loosen the hair from the top section. It’s all about keeping volume in the crown and creating that 1960s shape.

5 - Smooth the top with a comb. Using either a bristle brush or comb, smooth over the top section to create a rounder shape.

6-7 - Hide your hair elastic with a piece of hair. Take a small piece of hair from the base of your ponytail and wrap it around your hair elastic to cover it. Pin the end underneath with a bobby pin.

8 - You’re done! A quick spritz of hairspray will keep the style in place, though I like it a little messy just like Brigitte Bardot.

Who doesn’t love a simple ponytail, and this beehive-esque crown fits the 1960s trend perfectly.

I’ll be wearing this hairstyle with a midi skirt or vintage dress during the week, and with a breton top and jeans on the weekend. How do you like to wear your ponytail?
